Sanctuary United

Next Match

A community football team bringing people together through sport.

Our Story

Sanctuary United was formed in 2020 by Zack, a former refugee from Kurdistan. With a lifelong passion for football, he recognised the power of the game to bring people together and create a positive outlet for those rebuilding their lives after fleeing conflict and persecution.

Today, the team is made up of young players from asylum-seeking backgrounds, representing a wide range of nationalities. Many have faced incredibly difficult journeys, yet continue to show resilience, teamwork, and determination both on and off the pitch.

“Football is a universal language. It brings people together, irrespective of their nationalities, cultures or beliefs.” — George Weah

Our Journey

Sanctuary United played its first official match in September 2023 against Eastbourne District General Hospital, ending in a memorable 5–5 draw.

Since then, the team has played over 25 matches against local organisations including Sussex Police, HMP Lewes, Friends of Eastbourne Hospital, and Kings Church.

They have also been invited to tournaments at Southhampton FC (June 2025) and Ipswich (February 2026), reflecting their growing reputation.
